How to Set Up a Headset & Microphone

Setting up a headset and microphone on your computer can increase your ability to communicate online. Whether you wish to improve communication while playing online games or chatting with your friends, a headset and microphone setup will help you. To set up your headset and microphone, you will need to plug their adapters into the appropriate spots on your computer.

Instructions

1
Plug in the stereo plugs for your headset and microphone into the most convenient audio ports on your computer. The headset stereo plug is green, while the microphone port is pink. These ports are located on the front or back of your computer.

2
Double-click the sound icon in the system tray, located on the bottom right-hand side of your screen to launch the volume control panel. Ensure that the "Mute Microphone" button is not checked. If it is, click the box to uncheck it.

3
Click the "Start" button on your desktop, hover your mouse over "All Programs," then "Accessories," and click on "Sound Recorder." This will launch the "Sound Recorder" program, and allow you to test if your headset and microphone are working properly.

4
Click the "Record" button and speak into the microphone.

5
Click the "Play" button to listen to your recorded message. If you are able to hear the message through your headset, then both the headset and microphone are working correctly.
