How to Fix a Microphone in Window XP

The microphone on your Windows XP computer connects to your PC through the audio card on your computer, which translates the information coming from the microphone to the computer. No moving parts are found within the microphone itself, so problems experienced with the microphone indicate an underlying problem with the sound card, provided the microphone is not damaged in any way.

Instructions

1
Examine the microphone and microphone cord to look for signs of physical damage.

2
Unplug the microphone from the computer and plug it back in, resetting the connection.

3
Insert the driver CD into the computer. Click "Start," "Control Panel" and click "Device Manager."

4
Click "Sound Controllers" and select your sound card. Click "Driver," "Update Driver" and select the drive containing the driver CD to reinstall the driver, obviating issues with the sound card interface for your microphone.
