How to Wire a Microphone Cable

When connecting a microphone to a sound board, you need to properly wire it to the recording system. This typically requires you to use anywhere from one to two cables. Most microphones have an XLR cable port on the bottom, allowing you to wire the device without tangling the microphone up with the cables. An XLR cable connection has three metal prongs in the middle of the port and is used for both studio recording and film camera recording.

Instructions

1
Insert the XLR cable into the XLR port on the bottom of the microphone.

2
Connect the bottom end of the XLR cable into an XLR to 1/4-inch adapter. Most amps and many sound boards only take 1/4-inch cable connections.

3
Plug the 1/4-inch cable into the "Line-In" port on the amp or sound board.

4
Power on the microphone (there is a small power switch on the front of the device), then power on the amp or sound board.
