How to Replace a SM58 Cartridge

The SM58 is a dynamic vocal microphone produced by Shure. Intended for professional use, you use it most often for live performances and, sometimes, karaoke. The microphone has a built-in filter that cuts down on popping and hissing during vocals. The cartridge inside the microphone occasionally stops working and you have to replace it.

Instructions
1. Hold the base of the microphone and twist the top clockwise to remove the head with the attached cartridge.

2. Pull off gently with needle-nose pliers the wires that attach the handle of the microphone to the cartridge.

3. Unscrew with a small screwdriver the screw in the bottom of the cartridge. Pull the cartridge out of the microphone head. Set aside the small screw you removed.

4. Place the Shure R59 replacement cartridge into the head and screw it into place with the small screw you set aside.

5. Plug in the soldering iron and let it heat up for a minute or two. Replace the wires in the cartridge as they were before -- the green wire attaches to the plus sign, and the yellow wire to the other side. If you have a third black wire, it goes on the bottom of the cartridge. Touch the soldering iron to the base of each wire and hold it for several seconds to melt the wire into place.

6. Screw the head of the microphone back into the handle, twisting the head of the microphone counterclockwise three times before screwing the head into the handle. This helps avoid excess strain on the wires.
