How to Make Mics Into Studio Mics

By Toby Tate

There is a huge variety of microphones available for just about any recording need.
There are as many different types of microphones for recording music to choose from as there are musical instruments and styles. Many musicians tend to use their Macs or personal computers as recording studios and there are a number of microphones that can be plugged directly into the USB port of a computer. But if you already own microphones that you use for live sound applications, such as the Shure SM57 or SM58, making mics into studio mics is mostly just a matter of adjusting between live sound and studio.

Instructions

1
Find the mics that you plan to use for recording and plug them into your computer or mixing board.

2
Have the musicians set up their instruments, then mic them accordingly, i.e. drums, amplifiers, etc.

3
Have the band play and listen, preferably in a separate room, to the sound over your close-field monitor speakers or through your headphones.

4
Listen to a CD of a band that sounds good to you and try to recreate the sound of the instruments on that CD.

5
Make a short-duration recording of the band and play it back, paying attention to the different frequencies, i.e. the mid-range and lows of each instrument.

6
Adjust the equalization highs, mids and lows on each microphone channel of the mixing board, virtual mixer or equalizer until you get the desired sound.
