 How to Replace an SM58

The Shure SM58 has been the dynamic microphone of choice amongst professional live musicians for the microphone's overwhelming clarity and durability. Whenever a Shure SM58 microphone goes on the fritz from extended use, you only need to install a new cartridge, not simply throw it out. This takes opening the microphone, then removing the old cartridge first.

Instructions

1
Twist the top of the microphone while holding its base to remove the cartridge and head unit of the microphone.

2
Use the needle-nose pliers to remove the wires from the cartridge that hold it to the microphone's handle.

3
Use a screwdriver to remove the small screw located at the base of the microphone, then pull the cartridge free from the microphone's casing.

4
Insert the new cartridge, then replace the small screw you removed in the last step.

5
Plug the soldering iron into an AC outlet, then wait for it to heat up. Replace each of the cables to their original locations on the cartridge, then solder them into place. Attach the green wire to the "+" sign connection, and the yellow wire to the opposite side. The black cable attaches to the connection on the bottom of the cartridge. Apply the tip of the soldering iron over top of the wires, once they are laid on the proper connections, to melt the existing solder. This will hold each of the cables into place.

6
Screw the top of the microphone back into place counterclockwise, then screw the head back onto the handle. Your SM58 will now be ready for use.

Tips & Warnings
Soldering irons should be used with extreme caution, and away from flammable materials.
