Clean your microphone. Under heavy use, most microphone grilles will collect an abundance of smoke, saliva, lipstick and other disease-harboring bacteria. Unscrew the grille of the SM58 and clean it in a solution of water and mild detergent such as dish soap. Use a soft toothbrush to remove other debris. Let the grille dry completely before screwing it back on.

Clean the interior foam diaphragm cover. With the grille removed, hold the microphone upside-down and use a soft toothbrush with the detergent/water solution to softly scrub the foam. Always keep the microphone upside-down to prevent any moisture from leaking into the cartridge.

Disinfect your SM58 between uses. Using a diluted solution of mouthwash and water and a toothbrush, gently scrub the grill, again keeping it upside-down. This is useful if multiple people are using the mic and will help eliminate odor.

Deoxidize the connector. The three-pronged XLR connector on your Shure SM58 can become oxidized with prolonged use. Use a reputable solution, such as ProGold GXL or DeOXIT to clean the connector jack. Use a soft cloth and wait for the connector to dry completely before plugging the mic back in.

Store your microphone under optimal conditions. When not in use, keep your SM58 in a microphone case or bag to avoid dust or accidental damage. Avoid exposure to excessive heat and/or humidity.
