Samsung has brought out a variant of its Galaxy SIII phone which uses a Samsung-designed modem and applications processor, reports electronicsfeed, a few months after Apple came out with iPhone 5 which uses an Apple-designed applications processor.
This is a blow to independent suppliers of apps processors and modems such as Qualcomm, STE, Broadcom, Via and Intel as Samsung and Apple supply half the smartphone market and the smartphone market represents about 40% of the total mobile phone market.
It was the prospect of the smartphone market narrowing down to just two major suppliers who each made their own modems and apps processors, which recently persuaded TI to pull out of developing its OMAP processors for the mobile market.
In Q3 Samsung sold 56 million smartphones and Apple 27 million, says TomiAhonen, with Huawei on 16 million and everyone else on 8 million or less.
